In week 5 (we’re halfway through season 1!) Breanna Briggs from Leap Coffee in Carlsbad, California joins the show. Bre is Leap’s head roaster and essentially the all coffee everything. In our conversation we discuss the role of women in the coffee industry, and how important that representation is. We also chat about how Leap Coffee came to be, and how they’ve adapted to the impacts of the coronavirus.

Leap’s mission is to get back to basics. In their mission statement they say, “Positive intentions are behind all we do whether it’s choosing sustainable earth friendly products, responsibly sourced coffee, or the culinary partners we bring in to assist…Just good people, and good coffee, just the way it should be.”

I've never had a job that I have loved as much as what I have right now.
-Breanna Briggs, Head Roaster at Leap Coffee.

Breanna was quick to laugh, and a real pleasure to chat with. Her pride in her work and passion for the relationships built through coffee was evident during our interview. Since our conversation I’ve tried the Costa Rica and Cheers! blends of Leap Coffee she roasts, and have recommended both to friends in my personal life.

COFFEE VOCABULARY

Organic: “Certified Organic” means that the coffee has been produced using natural products and renewable, sustainable resources. With organic coffee, you can usually assume that at least 95% of the beans have been grown according to organic conditions. This means avoiding the use of synthetic chemicals and materials, including fertilizers and pesticides.

Bird-friendly: Bird-friendly coffee is sometimes called shade-grown coffee. It is popular in Brazil where there are often clashes between coffee plantation owners and those keen to preserve and protect the rainforests. These coffees are grown amongst plants, trees, and animals that are native to the area in an effort enable producers to continue growing coffee while also conserving native species and preventing damage to forests.

COFFEE FOR HEALTH CARE WORKERS

Thanks to the paid subscribers of this newsletter. They really helped give this project a boost right off the bat. I’m going to be using that subscriber money to purchase local coffee and beer for our frontline healthcare workers here in San Diego. Hopefully it provides a few moments of relaxation, and maybe just a moment where things feel kind of normal.

Right now I’m offering 30% off subscriptions to a full year of Roast! West Coast’s premium content plus a copy of my fiction novella “Eli & Jane” which features some pretty great coffee drinking scenes. For every new subscriber I’ll buy more coffees for more healthcare workers through the end of the year. Thanks for your support of this show, your own local healthcare teams and coffee roasters.
