Where We've Been: Misfit Coffee

We stopped at Misfit Coffee in Minneapolis, MN to see if we fit in with the misfits who make the coffee, and the troll dolls that oversee it all.

Where We've Been: Misfit Coffee

I met Joe in line at Misfit Coffee. He's a regular and assures me that not only is the coffee good, but the owners are "good guys." I don't meet them, so I have to take his word on their character. As for the coffee, it's dang good.

I ordered a Sumatra drip and a double shot of the same coffee as my espresso. The drip is excellent. The espresso is very good, perhaps ever so slightly overextracted if I wanted to be exacting, but I don't.

Three images. L-R: Concrete block building. Doorways and windows inset against worn black concrete block.

The space is concrete, warmed up by a less-than-curated aesthetic. A movie theater stand for Once Upon A Time In Hollywood is propped up atop the overhang leading to the bathroom. A concrete countertop at the bar is covered by hundreds of troll dolls. Neon signs adorn the walls. A corner record player offers a sophistication (perhaps pretension) not felt elsewhere. Somehow it all works.
The music is good. The vibe is excellent. The menu is unique. A banana cold brew, anyone?

I sit at the bar. I'm waiting to meet a friend. When a woman's voice says, "Hi, handsome," I turn. The audacity! I see her hand rest on the small of the back of the gentleman sitting next to me. I refocus on the troll dolls and my coffee.
At Misfit Coffee, I suggest you look closer. The tiniest of details make the space. Is that a sticker of a heart? Or a sticker featuring a bunch of chopped-off fingers laid out into the shape of a heart? What do the letters on the side of the chipped mug say? Look closer.

L-R: Trolls looking down on a yellow mug of coffee. A yellow mug with a black graphic of a stretched out face. A neon "espresso" sign is over mugs on an espresso machine.

It is industrial, yet warm. It is rough, yet cool. It has that...that....that...thing. It all works together and is punctuated by the good coffee. I'm writing notes in my Moleskine* as fast as I can. If a coffee spot inspires, then something is working.

*A Moleskine? Pretentious, much? I could have said pocket notebook, but I'm particular.
