Editor’s note: Music is an essential component of my coffee drinking experience. This is what I’m listening to with my cup of coffee this month. Each side is 45 minutes long, just like the blank Memorex tapes I used to buy as a kid, and about the time it takes to enjoy a leisurely cup of coffee…or three.
Warning: This month's mixtape includes some songs that would qualify for the Parental Advisory sticker.
It has been a long summer. Full stop.
I've been traveling or packing fairly nonstop since the middle of April. It isn't a complaint. I've been able to have coffee in a lot of cool places and meet a lot of great new coffee friends. We've camped, explored, driven, flown, hiked, and driven some more. We've slept in a tent, in a dome, in a hotel, in many guest rooms, and one memorable night that reminded me of summer camps from my youth, on bunk beds.
But...
We—wife, pup, and I—are missing the routine of daily life. We're missing regular daily expectations, the meals we like to cook, the walks before breakfast, and the consistency of a flush toilet in the middle of the night. We are missing the easy access to the things we need and already own, but are in storage. We miss the dentist's appointments and the grocery store we like, and the lovely people at the pet store.
This is our last month on the road. It's a big one. We're in Minneapolis, MN* today with stops in Iceland, Wisconsin, and Idaho before reaching Oregon to finally settle down for 2026. Amidst all the upheaval, I've been seeking comfort in my playlist. The songs in our September Mixtape have lasted in my feed for the long haul.
When I know I want something that hits a certain mood, a certain sense of consistency, and will evoke a specifc feeling or memory, these are some of the songs I know, I know will get me where I want to go.
*If you make it out this way, just southwest of town is Getaway Motor Coffee in Carver, MN. They do a nice job. This flight of two hot and two cold was $14. That's a lot of work for a barista! The coffee is from local wholesale roaster Driven, and they also sell ONYX.

New collab with The Pinery Coffee Company out now. Look for our recap of the "Ribbon Cutting" soon.
