No other notes. Thank you for being there on the other side of this podcast, newsletter, and coffee drinking experience.

  • Casey Kasum's syrupy voice was ubiquitous during my childhood. He was already well into his tenure as host and was wildly popular. There were only so many moments where you could anticipate when a song would be on, because you knew where it had landed in the Top 40 the week prior. It gave you a modicum of potential success at recording the song you wanted onto a blank cassette tape.

  • When you are a kid, everyone out of school seems really old. You don’t have a long enough timeline to create context. To a child, if you can rent a car, you're ready to be put in a senior home. I've tipped over to where everyone else seems young.
  • All of our senses impact our sense of taste. This article by Matt Portnoy, published on Metrobi, breaks it down in an easier to read manner than the numerous scientific journal studies on the subject.
...research has shown that color perception plays a crucial role in how we experience different foods. For example, a cherry flavored drink with red coloring is often perceived as having a more intense flavor than those without, even when the real flavor remains unchanged. This phenomenon extends to various fruit flavored beverages and even solid foods like chicken bouillon. • Matt Portnoy, Metrobi

  • I used a 1:1 water to baking soda ratio* to remove the rust from the impacted metal of my grinder. I blended until it created a thick paste, and coated the parts. I left them sit for about 20 minutes, and wiped it clean with a soft cloth to avoid scratching the components.

There are many natural ways to remove rust that involve baking soda, lemon juice, or even Coca-Cola. This article on Branch Basics** offers directives on several methods. Their method substitutes lemon juice for water.

    *I eyeballed it.
**I don't know or advocate for Branch Basics, but the article's content reads as accurate in my experience.

  • Who knows what goes viral? Nick’s advice: put it out either way. If it is good, the algorithms will pick it up (possibly). If it isn't, they probably won't, and no one will see it. If you want to make a video, reach out to Nick through the Roastar Instagram account @roastar.
  • Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible owes a debt of gratitude to the movie Sneakers. Some scenes were clearly the inspiration for shots in the first Cruise Mission Impossible film. I say "homage" because all our content and entertainment owes a debt to something that came before—whether a creator realizes it or not. Coffee is similar in that at any given time, so many roasters are roasting the same or similar green coffees from the same sources, and have been drinking similar coffees from different roasters. The collective intelligence gleaned from experience intentionally and unintentionally influences all the roasts that come next.
  • Table talk at the judging table is often discouraged, but inevitable. I'm a poor coffee-flavor poker player. My cupping face makes it obvious how I feel.

Slip Porcelain description from Wikipedia.

slip (porcelain) is a clay slurry used to produce pottery and other ceramic wares.[1] Liquified clay, in which there is no fixed ratio of water and clay, is called slip or clay slurry which is used either for joining leather-hard (semi-hardened) clay body (pieces of pottery) together by slipcasting with mouldglazing or decorating the pottery by painting or dipping the pottery with slip.[2] Pottery on which slip has been applied either for glazing or decoration is called slipware.

  • My favorite type of brewer at home is a V60 followed by an Aeropress, but there are those days when I don't want to put in all the effort, or I have guests and need a batch. That's when I turn to the SimplyGoodCoffee brewer. I have two. I've been recommending them long enough that I eventually became an affiliate for the brand. It's been a win-win, because it is easy for me to promote a product I like.

(Not) Pro-Tip: Getting Botox before a cupping session could prevent you from making a Cupping Face, however it is also insane. Please do not do that. It will not improve your coffee judging experience in any way, whatsoever.
  • The November mixtape was pretty good. However, the work of making a mixtape has changed. No waiting. No anticipation. No button pressing. I have millions of songs ready to stream at a moment's notice. It's easier, but that doesn't mean I don't still love putting in the care that goes with blending various songs, song-styles, and emotions together.
November Coffee Mixtape.
Music is an essential component of my coffee drinking experience. These are the songs I’m listening to with my cup of coffee this month. Each side is 45 minutes long, just like the blank Memorex tapes I used to buy as a kid, and about the time it takes to enjoy a leisurely cup of coffee…or three.

JUST FOR FUN-ISH:

Drinking coffee doesn't have noticeable impacts on my daily life, until it does. I don't usually notice caffeine impacts until about 2:00 PM at any given coffee festival I'm attending. On a normal day, I drink about 45 grams of ground coffee (720 grams brewed). On festival days, I drink a couple of cups in the morning, either at a new coffee shop (or two), and then take quick sample hits throughout the day from the event's roaster village. My best guess is that I triple my intake, not just for one day, but several in a row.
