The number one thing to look for when purchasing a coffee maker is its ability to heat water above 200° consistently.
Use a kitchen thermometer to test the water temperature.
The second most important component of a good automatic coffee maker is its ability to evenly wet the coffee grinds. If you’re not sure your spray head is working correctly, look at your coffee grinds after a brewing session.
Keeping your coffee maker clean by using high quality water or a coffee maker cleaning product to prevent mineral build-up.
Be sure to grind your beans with a burr grinder or have them ground at your favorite craft coffeeshop or roaster.
Finally, what features are the most important to you? Do you want your coffee maker to automatically brew every morning? Do you also want it to grind the beans? What information do you want from the digital readout, if there is one? Can you buy replacement parts, or is this machine a paperweight if something breaks?
These are the types of questions you’ll want to ask yourself beyond the most critical questions about water temperature and dispersion.

Chris recommended the Technivorm Moccamaster as an automatic coffeemaker. The one-cup version (right) brews a 4:00m cup, and the brand touts a programmable temperature range of 195-206°. The company also sells burr grinders and offers a 5-year warranty.
